Gamboa Family History
1st Generation and growing……
West Coast Mushroom Founder, Abel Gamboa came to the United States in 1980 at the age of 15. Like many immigrants in the past and present, Abel had hopes and dreams of a new life in America.
Young and full of ideas he started working and learning all phases of the mushroom industry from growing, to picking, to packing, as well as sales. In 1992, he bought his first two double plant. In five years he had 70 doubles, and in seven years 125 doubles. In 2006, with the help of his brothers, Abel purchased a compost wharf.
Hard work, determination, and the mindset to think ahead propelled Abel to bigger and better things, as in 2008, Abel hired his first salesman, Charles Losito. In two years Abel needed another mushroom facility and his own trucks.
In 2010 with the purchase of an additional growing operation in Quincy, Florida and the startup of his own trucking company, Abel along with his younger brother Alvaro, was now ready to grow and ship all their mushrooms proudly under the label of “Florida Fresh”.
West Coast Mushrooms are sold to distributors, but you will also find us along the East Coast and throughout Florida, New Orleans, and Texas. Producing in excess of 1,000,000 lbs per week, West Coast has the capacity to fill all customer orders and deliver while offering a wide variety of product to include Exotics and Organics.
Growing mushrooms is not an easy task. It is a round the clock job that involves everyone thinking the same way Abel thinks and wants things done. Abel’s concern for his team and customers is paramount. Respect, integrity, and fundamental core values are very revealing in this business.
“I owe a lot to my team and customers”, says Abel. “Because of their loyalty to our label, we have expanded and modernized our business. I am grateful to have achieved so much of my dreams. Stay tuned…..the best is yet to come!”
